Description

山多平地少的港島，由早年至今的發展，主要集中在北部的維港地帶，填海令海岸線多次北移，各區街道也發生很大變化。這張 1968年由「大眾實用叢書出版公司」繪制的香港街道詳圖，可見當日主要街道都集中在灣仔、中環及上環一帶。中環一帶分佈了政府設施如當時的港督府和動植物公園，上環更細碎而密集的街區，則是當時華人聚居地區獨有的城貌，在1894經歷大規模鼠疫後，這裡成為本港公共衞生及城市規劃的起點。至於海旁一帶，密集的碼頭則是當日南北行及米業的集散地，是當時香港作為轉口貿易港的重要印記。
